A closed loop system is good for servos (required, actually), but not so good with steppers. A Taig-sized machine is best suited to steppers. I would avoid attempting to set up a closed loop system on one. The only commercial closed-loop system for them that I know of is godawful and completely pointless.

That is perhaps one of the good features of the closed loop, and the 'home box' would then reset to start the same job again, but invariably it starts tripping after a few perfect pieces and the offset affects the final finish.

Convince me (not) to buy a G540 for my Taig
For the price, they are right on par with the G540 and a set of 386 oz/in steppers. (maybe a little cheaper if you shop around). I still love my tank G540, but that closed loop alarm is the ticket for me now. My next mill upgrade now that my R8-TTS spindle with power draw bar is complete is moving to closed loop on my mill.

So for around $1800.00 I could get a rugged Taig MicroMill with a closed loop servos controlled system. Since I am pretty new to all this, am I missing something important?
