Smithy 3 in 1
There are several companies that sell a 3 in 1 where the mill is placed behind the lathe, which gets around most of the limitations of the smithy type. Only one I can find on a quick search is the grizzly G0516, but I've seen larger and smaller ones available. Combo Lathe w/ Milling Attachment at Grizzly.

I have to include in that $3K all the tools (vises, clamps, bits, etc.). I can get that R45 clone for ~$2K, a small HF lathe Mini Lathe - 7" x 10" Precision Mini Lathe for $400, with $600 left over for ancillaries. I can get Randy's HF 3-in-1 for $1,600 and have $1,400 left over for "other stuff".

They do fit in a smaller space than separate machines, but also have reach, size, speeds, and rigidity issues. If at all possible, I would get a bench top lathe and a bench top mill for about the same total price, or perhaps less.

Smithy lathe mill combo
Apart from a large used lathe and milling machine, I would look for a "jack knife" or radial arm drill. They are very handy. EDIT: Smithy's are belt driven. Belts are usually quieter and provide smoother power transfer. That said, my gear driven Pacemaker is quieter than my Smithy. The import machines just seem really loud for some reason.
