The mine is an open pit operation involving drilling and blasting, excavation, crushing and screening, followed by road and rail haulage to the port for export. PK is currently producing 2.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) @ 64% Fe, hauling 100km by road and 630km by rail (via Wirrida rail loop) to export through Whyalla Port on Capsize vessels.

The estimated GHG emissions were 11.9 kg CO 2 e for mining and processing 1 t of iron ore. The embodied energy values were 153 MJ/t ore for iron ore. The results showed that loading and hauling made the largest contributions (approximately 50%) to the total GHG emissions from the mining and processing of iron ore.
