Nickel laterite ores often contain phyllosilicate minerals such as talc, serpentine, and smectite. For example, Fig. 3 shows a QEMSCAN image of a laterite ore from Indonesia (Blancher et al., 2015). Therefore, a good knowledge of clay minerals is helpful to understand the mineralogy of such laterite ores.
